Position Description:

NHS is currently seeking a Certified Peer Support Specialist to join our NHS Behavioral health division in our Carlisle, PA location.

POSITION DETAILS

Provide peer counseling and support to individuals, providing guidance and encouragement to individuals to take reponsibility and actively participate in their own recovery.
Serve as a mentor to individuals to promote hope and empowerment.
Provide expertise and consultation from a mental health individual perspective to the entire team concerning the individual’s experiences on symptoms of mental illness, the effects, and side effects of mediations, individual’s responses to and opinions of treatment and individuals experiences of recovery.
Collaborate with the team to create a team oriented environment in which the individual’s point of view and experiences are recognized, understood and respected and in which self determination and decision making in treatment planning are maximized and supported.
Help protect individual rights. Increase awareness of and support participation in individual self-help programs and individual advocacy groups that promote recovery.
Assist in managing individual crisis and emergencies (as appropriate).
Prepare and run a monthly peer group.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Certified as a Peer Support Specialist
Must have a valid driver’s license
Must have a knowledge and understanding of recovery principles and recovery driven services.
Must have personal experience as a recipient of mental health services and a willingness to share experiences to provide expertise about the recovery process.
High school diploma or at least two years of paid or volunteer work experience with adults with severe mental illness.
College degree in human service field preferred.
